Balnakeil Beach

Balnakeil is a white sand beach in the north-western tip of Scotland. And it’s definitely one of the most beautiful on the mainland. It spans more than 2km in length and it’s quite wide as well.

This beach has grassy sand dunes, which are quite cool. These are a very common sight in the Outer Hebrides nearby, but not on the mainland.

Unlike Sango Sands - another awesome beach that lies just off the main road and in Durness - you need to take a little detour from the NC500 for this one. It’s a short and scenic 2km drive from Durness to Balnakeil Beach - don’t miss it! Free parking is available.

Along the way, you can stop for a hot chocolate at the nearby Cocoa Mountain - probably the most remote chocolatier in the UK.
