Clach An Truishal

Yes, it’s just a rock, but…

Clach An Truishal is said to be the tallest standing stone in Scotland, the sole remaining one from a stone circle that was built around 5,000 years ago. And so I thought perhaps it deserves a post of its own.

This standing stone has nothing to do with the famous stone circle at Callanish, even though it looks similar, as it’s more than 20 miles away from it.

To be honest, I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit this one, given that the Callanish Standing Stones are just as old and much more interesting. But, if you are travelling to Butt of Lewis (the northernmost point on the island), perhaps it’s worth a quick stop - the stone is really close to the main road.

I was a little intrigued by the location of the stone - a 5,000 year old Neolithic wonder standing solitary, nestled between two houses in the tiny village of Baile an Truiseil.
