Gljúfrabúi

the hidden one

***

This waterfall is a gem hidden in plain sight. It lies just a short walk away from Seljalandsfoss and it’s quite spectacular, in a different way, but nowhere near as popular. It seems that Seljalandsfoss acts as a tourist magnet, and that’s all there is to see for most visitors.

Gljúfrabúi is 40m high but out of sight, concealed in a little canyon. You can see the waterfall through a narrow crack, but you have to be a little brave to get the full experience. It’s a short walk along the stream. You may find some larger stones to step on, but some waterproof boots will definitely help. Either way, prepare to get quite wet, so watch out with your camera - it may be challenging to get a good picture here. Not many people know about this waterfall, and only some of those venture beyond the canyon entrance, so you will likely have the whole place to yourself!

Here’s another little secret. Start here instead of Seljalandsfoss. Parking at Gljufrabui is much less abundant but free of charge, and it’s only a 5-10min walk between the two waterfalls.
