Seljalandsfoss

the one you can walk behind

***

This is one of three waterfalls in Iceland that are massively popular.

Seljalandsfoss drops 60m over a cliffside and has its origins in the volcano/glacier Eyjafjallajökull - the one that erupted in 2010. The cool thing about Seljalandsfoss is that there is a path that takes you behind the waterfall (though it’s not unique in this regard - the lesser known Kvernufoss is similar).

Because it’s the first major stop on a journey from Reykjavik, Seljalandsfoss is doomed to be very crowded at certain times, as it marks the first entry on the itinerary of most tour groups. For that reason, aim to visit this one either very early or late. It’s not long before the parking area is flooded with tour buses and a procession of technicolour jackets develops along the path.

There is parking fee and it’s quite steep (700ISK, ~£4). I’m just going to say you may want to visit the nearby Gljúfrabúi waterfall first.
